Asia HealthPartners Endoscopy Centre offers both upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (OGD - gastroscopy) and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy (colonoscopy), and is run by Dr Wong Nan Yaw and Dr Lai Wai Kwan Vincent.

Dr Wong Nan Yaw – Certified Specialist General and Colorectal Surgeon

Dr Wong Nan Yaw specialist general and colorectal surgeonDr. Wong is a certified specialist general and colorectal surgeon. He graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1993 with the degrees of MB,BS. After a few years of practice he developed a passionate interest for surgical diseases and decided to embark on a career in surgery.

He successfully obtained his Fellowship with the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh in 1998. The increasing incidence of colorectal cancers in South East Asia prompted him to sub-specialize in colorectal surgery.

Dr. Wong trained in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital, which is an internationally recognized center of excellence for the treatment of colorectal diseases.

In 2002 he was awarded an Exchange Fellowship to spend a year training at the Bradford Royal Infirmary in the United Kingdom. Dr. Wong obtained his specialist accreditation with the Singapore Medical Council in 2003.

In 2005 he was given an award to train in minimally invasive (laparoscopic) colorectal surgery at the prestigious Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York, USA. Under the mentorship of renowned Professor Jeffery Milsom he further honed his skills in laparoscopic surgical treatment of colorectal cancers.

Dr Vincent Lai attained his basic medical degree from the University of Sheffield in England in 1993. He had 5 years of specialist training in Gastroenterology and then sub-specialized a further 5 years in Hepatology in Birmingham UK, which has one of the largest Liver Transplant Units in Europe. During this time, he had exposure to general and transplant hepatology, with a particular interest in the management of acute liver failure and viral hepatitis.

Dr Lai had gained comprehensive training in all areas of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the investigation and management of gastrointestinal and liver conditions.

In 2002, he was awarded the prestigious Medical Research Council Clinical Training Fellowship. He attained his Ph.D. degree from the University of Birmingham in 2007, investigating the liver immunity in viral hepatitis. Dr Lai was also actively involved in the care of patients with acute liver failure and the use of liver dialysis in these situations.

He completed his specialist training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology in England. He was accredited by the Specialist Accreditation Board in Gastroenterology in England in 2006 and was a Consultant in a teaching hospital prior to his return to Singapore in 2008.

As a Consultant Hepatologist at the Derby NHS Foundation Trust Hospital from 2006 to 2008, Dr Lai helped in the further development of the provision of viral hepatitis services in Derby. During his tenure, he not only obtained a grant from the Trust for a study in infection in liver patients but was also actively involved in medical research.

Since coming back to Singapore in 2008 Dr Lai has been actively involved in both cadaveric and living donor liver transplantation. He has published extensively in viral immunology and in the area of acute liver failure.

Dr Lai’s main clinical interest is in liver failure, viral hepatitis and liver transplantation. He is also trained in therapeutic endoscopy and ERCP. His research interests are in the adaptive and innate immunity in patients with liver disease particularly in patients with viral hepatitis and liver failure.
