About Dr Ajeet
Dr Ajeet Madhav Wagle is Medical Director & Senior Consultant at Singapore International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, Mount Elizabeth Medical Centre & International Eye Cataract Retina Centre, Farrer Park Medical Centre. He is also a Visiting Consultant to the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Alexandra Health Private Ltd.
He was previously Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital; Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at Alexandra Hospital; Consultant at the Eye Clinic at Jurong Medical Centre; Associate Consultant, Vitreoretinal Service, Sanakara Nethralaya, India; Clinical Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore; Part-time Lecturer, Bachelors Degree Programme in Optometry and Advanced Diploma in Optometry, Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre.
After completing his Basic and Advanced Surgical Training in Ophthalmology, Dr Ajeet received a hands-on clinical fellowship training in diseases and surgery of the vitreous and retina at the renowned top eye institution in India - Sankara Nethralaya, Medical Research Foundation, Chennai. During his fellowship training, he worked with world-renowned vitreoretinal surgeons including Dr SS Badrinath, Dr Lingam Gopal, Dr Tarun Sharma, Dr Pramod Bhende and Dr Mahesh P. Shanmugam. His current areas of interest include retinal and macular diseases, cataract and comprehensive ophthalmology.
Dr Ajeet has keen interests in teaching and research. He has published many articles in peer-reviewed local and international journals and has two book chapters to his credit. He has been a Principal Investigator for three sponsored multi-centre randomized clinical trials at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. He has also been actively involved in teaching medical students as a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine and optometry students as a Part-time Lecturer at Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre and a Guest Lecturer at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Optometry Centre.
Dr Ajeet has been actively involved in raising awareness of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of blindness in developed countries, in Singapore and has led the nation-wide AMD Awareness Week campaign in Singapore from 2008-2011 as Chairman of the Organising Committee. He was successfully awarded the Public Health Education Grant from Ministry of Health for the AMD Awareness Week campaign for 6 years. He has been instrumental in increasing the reach of the awareness campaign to the community by engaging many community centres, public libraries, senior citizen homes, nursing homes and religious places of worship across the nation. To commemorate 10 years a of successful awareness campaign for AMD in Singapore, Dr Ajeet and his team published a book titled ‘A Vision for the Nation – A Decade of AMD Awareness Campaign in Singapore’ in 2014.
Dr Ajeet has won many awards including a Gold Medal for being the Best Outgoing Student at Medical Research Foundation in India, a Distinction in Basic Science Assessment Test of the International Council of Ophthalmology, many named Research Prizes for Best Oral Presentations and an Outstanding Published Paper at the National Healthcare Group Eye Institute Research Day presentations. He has also won numerous Service Champion Awards such as the Health Services Excellence Silver Award at Alexandra Hospital, Meritorious Service Award at Eye and Vision Health Awards and Service Champion Award at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. He was awarded a Travel Fellowship Grant at the First Singapore Eye Research Institute – Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (SERI-ARVO) Meeting and the International Council of Ophthalmology Fellowship Award.
Dr Ajeet has been actively involved in providing voluntary community eye services. He has organised eye screenings and has given many public health talks. He also likes to volunteer his time at free eye surgery camps for needy patients in developing countries such as India on a regular basis.
